Walnut Canyon

Elfrida and I started our next road trip today.

The drive up from Tucson to Flagstaff was pretty uneventful - we have no pictures to share.  But we arrived in plenty of time to fit our first stop into the afternoon.

Walnut Canyon is a few miles east of Flagstaff, allegedly named after an early pioneer's July 4th celebration, but I noticed that we had to cross the Rio De Flag river on our way there.  Wikipedia is silent on this issue.

Walnut Canyon is famous for its pueblos built into an overhang halfway up its steep canyon walls.

Center of picture: Pueblo walls create rooms out of natural overhang

Sorry for the over-exposure

Notice people walking on the trail that is the natural overhang

Later we stopped for lunch.  There was a large quantity of a white powdery substance that seemed foreign and yet oddly familiar.  (No, not that white powdery substance!)  Snow!  The very thing we had come all this way to Arizona to avoid was here, waiting for us.
